Golden Monkeys & Mountain Gorillas
Where Gold Meets Silver!
Tucked away in the southwestern corner of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a small yet incredibly rich gem that offers some of the most immersive and intimate experiences with the endangered mountain gorillas. Part of the Virunga Conservation Area, Mgahinga is located in the foothills of the mighty Virunga Volcanoes, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes of lush forests, verdant bamboo groves, and dramatic volcanic peaks. This park is the perfect destination for the discerning traveler seeking a quieter, more secluded alternative to the popular Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, while still enjoying the unrivaled opportunity to trek with mountain gorillas.
Mgahinga may be smaller than other parks, but its natural beauty, cultural significance, and the chance to encounter gorillas in their natural habitat make it an extraordinary destination. The park is home to the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group, one of the most famous and well-established gorilla families in Uganda, known for their unique behavior and relatively relaxed approach to human visitors. Whether you’re an avid wildlife photographer, a nature enthusiast, or simply someone looking for an extraordinary adventure, Mgahinga offers a rare and life-changing experience.
Signature Experiences
The best time to visit Mgahinga is during the dry season, which lasts from June to September and December to February. During this period, the trekking trails are less slippery, and the weather is more favorable for outdoor activities. The dry season is also the best time to see the gorillas, as they are more active and easier to track.
However, the wet season (March to May and October to November) offers its own benefits. The park is less crowded, the landscapes are lush and green, and birdwatching is particularly rewarding during this time. For those seeking a quieter and more serene experience, the wet season may be ideal.
Mgahinga is approximately a 9-10 hour drive from Kampala, Uganda’s capital, or Entebbe, with the journey taking you through scenic landscapes, including rolling hills and picturesque villages. Alternatively, you can fly to Kisoro Airstrip from Entebbe or Kampala, and then take a short drive to the park. This is the quickest and most convenient way to reach Mgahinga, especially for those on tight schedules.
