The Mountains of the Moon
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” this awe-inspiring range is one of the most captivating and challenging trekking destinations in Africa. The park offers visitors the opportunity to explore dramatic landscapes, from lush, mist-covered forests and alpine meadows to rugged glaciers and snow-capped peaks. Towering above the surrounding plains, the Rwenzori Mountains are Africa’s third-highest mountain range, with Mount Stanley reaching an impressive 5,109 meters (16,763 feet) above sea level.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a hidden treasure for adventurers, nature lovers, and mountaineers, offering an unparalleled combination of breathtaking natural beauty, diverse ecosystems, and rich biodiversity. Unlike the more commonly visited safari parks in Uganda, Rwenzori is a destination that demands physical exploration and rewards visitors with remarkable landscapes and a sense of wilderness like no other. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in pristine nature, experiencing everything from trekking through lush forests to traversing glaciers, all while encountering a unique mix of flora and fauna.
Signature Experiences
The best time to visit the Rwenzori Mountains is during the dry season, which typically runs from June to September and December to February. These months offer the most favorable conditions for trekking, with relatively dry weather and better accessibility to the mountain trails. However, due to the park’s high altitude and unpredictable weather, trekkers should be prepared for rain at any time, even during the dry season.
The wet season (March to May and October to November) makes trekking conditions more challenging, as trails can become muddy and slippery, but this time also brings lush vegetation and vibrant landscapes. For those looking to avoid the crowds, the wet season can be an ideal time for a quieter, more isolated trek.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is accessible from Kasese, which is approximately a 6-7 hour drive from Kampala. Kasese is also accessible by domestic flights from Entebbe to Kasese Airport, making it an easier option for travelers with limited time. From Kasese, the park entrance is just a short drive away, and most trekking tours and lodges are easily accessible from the town.
