Questions about traveling to Kenya

Best time to travel to Kenya

Every season, a different expression of the wild.

Kenya is an extraordinary year-round destination, with each season revealing a different character of its landscapes and wildlife. The dry seasons, from June to October and January to March, offer particularly rewarding safari conditions, with golden savannahs, excellent wildlife viewing and beautiful opportunities for photography.

From July to October, the legendary Maasai Mara becomes the stage for the Great Migration, as vast herds of wildebeest and zebra move through the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. Beyond the Mara, Amboseli National Park offers remarkable elephant encounters against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, while Laikipia’s private conservancies invite guests to enjoy secluded wilderness, exceptional guiding and intimate wildlife experiences away from the crowds.

The green seasons, particularly April to May and November to December, reveal a softer, more tranquil Kenya. Seasonal rains transform the plains into lush landscapes, attracting abundant birdlife and creating beautiful photographic conditions. For travellers seeking privacy, these quieter months can offer a particularly rewarding experience, often accompanied by attractive seasonal lodge rates.

Along the Indian Ocean coastline, Kenya’s white-sand beaches and turquoise waters provide a beautiful complement to time in the wilderness, with December to March particularly appealing for a coastal escape.

At Bush Wander Experiences, we believe the finest time to visit Kenya is shaped not simply by the seasons, but by the experiences you wish to enjoy. Whether witnessing the Great Migration, exploring a private conservancy or retreating to a secluded coastal sanctuary, every journey is thoughtfully timed to reveal Kenya at its most extraordinary.

Expert travel tips for Kenya

Kenya | The Art of Traveling Well

An extraordinary journey begins with thoughtful preparation. From the sweeping plains of the Maasai Mara to Laikipia’s secluded conservancies and the tranquil shores of the Indian Ocean, a few essential considerations will ensure your Kenyan safari is as seamless as it is memorable.

Entry Requirements & Travel Documents

Most international visitors require an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before travelling to Kenya, although exemptions apply to certain nationalities. Applications can be completed through the official Kenyan government portal. We recommend checking your individual entry requirements well in advance and ensuring your passport remains valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.

Health, Safety & Peace of Mind

Kenya is a rewarding destination for discerning travellers, particularly when explored with experienced private guides. Consult a travel health professional before departure regarding recommended vaccinations and malaria prevention. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers arriving from certain countries. Comprehensive travel insurance, including emergency medical evacuation, is strongly recommended, especially for journeys into remote wilderness areas.

Traveling in Comfort

Kenya’s most exceptional safari destinations are often reached by light aircraft, allowing you to exchange lengthy road transfers for scenic flights over remarkable landscapes. Private safari vehicles, knowledgeable guides and carefully selected lodges provide a more intimate and flexible experience. For journeys involving domestic flights, soft-sided luggage is recommended, as baggage allowances are often restricted.

Currency, Culture & Local Etiquette

Kenya’s official languages are Swahili and English, while the local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). Major luxury lodges and hotels generally accept international credit cards, although carrying some local currency is useful for smaller purchases and gratuities. Respectful cultural encounters, thoughtful photography and an appreciation for local traditions enrich every journey.

The Luxury of Travelling Thoughtfully

For the most rewarding experience, we recommend allowing time to truly settle into each destination. Spend several nights in a private conservancy, embrace the quieter hours of the wilderness and leave room for unexpected encounters. Kenya’s greatest luxury is not simply found in its extraordinary lodges, but in the privilege of experiencing its wild spaces without hurry.

We create exclusive, responsibly crafted journeys across Kenya, combining extraordinary wildlife encounters, understated luxury and a meaningful commitment to conservation.

Travel Essentials & FAQs

What wildlife can you see in Rwanda?

Rwanda offers extraordinary wildlife diversity across its three principal national parks. Volcanoes National Park protects endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, while Nyungwe National Park is home to 13 primate species, including chimpanzees and black-and-white colobus monkeys. In Akagera National Park, travellers can encounter the Big Five alongside giraffes, zebras, hippos and numerous antelope species. With more than 700 recorded bird species, Rwanda is equally rewarding for bird enthusiasts.

When is the best time to visit Rwanda?

Rwanda welcomes travellers throughout the year, although the drier seasons from June to September and December to February generally offer more comfortable conditions for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking and savannah safaris. The wetter months, particularly March to May and October to November, bring lush landscapes, fewer visitors and beautiful photographic opportunities. Forest trails can be muddy in any season, making suitable trekking equipment essential.

Is Rwanda safe for luxury travelers?

Rwanda is widely recognised for its well-developed tourism infrastructure, welcoming hospitality and relatively orderly urban environment. Kigali and established safari destinations offer excellent accommodation and professionally guided experiences. At Bush Wander Experiences, we arrange private transfers, experienced guides and carefully selected luxury retreats to ensure a comfortable, thoughtfully managed journey. Travellers should nevertheless consult current official travel advisories, particularly concerning areas bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

How should you prepare for gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park takes place in mountainous rainforest at elevations of approximately 2,400 metres and above, requiring suitable clothing and a reasonable level of fitness. Waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, gloves, a rain jacket and a small daypack are recommended. Regular walking and hill hiking before departure can improve comfort, while local porters provide valuable assistance. The minimum trekking age is 15 years, and visitors must observe all ranger instructions and health precautions.

How challenging is gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

Gorilla trekking can range from relatively gentle forest walks to demanding hikes across steep volcanic slopes and dense vegetation. Depending on the gorilla family’s location, the experience may take two to six hours or longer, including the return journey. Once located, visitors normally enjoy one hour with the gorillas, with a maximum of eight trekkers per habituated family. Experienced park rangers guide each group, and porters are available for additional support.

How challenging is gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

Both destinations offer exceptional mountain gorilla encounters, although their experiences differ. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from Kigali, offers convenient access, exclusive luxury lodges and gorilla permits generally priced at USD 1,500 per international visitor. Uganda, with trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks, offers standard foreign non-resident permits at USD 800, alongside a specialised four-hour gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi. Rwanda is particularly suited to shorter luxury escapes, while Uganda offers greater flexibility for extended primate and wildlife safaris.

We curate exceptional private journeys through Rwanda, where exclusive luxury retreats, extraordinary encounters with mountain gorillas and deeply personalised experiences come together with a lasting commitment to conservation and local communities.
